Speech and Language Services


Speech and Language Therapy is provided by or under the supervision of a licensed Speech and Language Pathologist.  Services can be provided in the form of individual, group, and/or consultation to individual student teams.

Speech and language pathologists work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive communication, and swallowing disorders in adults and children.

Another important role of the speech-language pathologist is to identify and assess children at risk for reading and writing difficulties, as well as to provide phonological awareness intervention and documenting outcomes for reading and writing.

They collaborate with and train other professionals and parents to facilitate students’ academic, communication, and social skills in the educational environment.

AREAS OF NEED FREQUENTLY ADDRESSED AT PHILLIPS:

  • Challenges decoding written words and spelling

  • Difficulty understanding others or sharing thoughts, ideas and feelings

  • Difficulty connecting language to what is read or heard

  • Difficulty forming a complete sentence, using incorrect grammar, and confused word order

  • Difficulty producing speech sounds correctly or fluently

  • Impaired memory skills and/or difficulty with word finding

  • Impaired social communication skills

  • Limited vocabulary and/or difficulty defining and describing

  • Difficulty organizing thoughts, paying attention, planning, and/or problem solving

THERAPISTS OF THE PHILLIPS SCHOOLS SPEECH AND LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT ARE COMPRISED OF LICENSED SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS WITH CERTIFICATIONS OR TRAINING IN THE FOLLOWING:
