Pre-ETS Summer Program
Growing Futures: A Summer Pre-Employment Transition Service
Open to Maryland students attending both public and non-public area schools
PHILLIPS Programs is partnering with Maryland DORS (Division of Rehabilitation Services) to offer a Pre-Employment Transition Service (Pre-ETS) entitled Growing Futures. Growing Futures engages students in opportunities to thrive through hands on experiential learning in culinary arts and urban agriculture. Students work individually and in small groups in an indoor hydroponic farm growing microgreens, herbs and other fresh produce. They use their fresh greens in the menu planning, food preparation and cooking activities in a state of the art commercial kitchen.
Growing Futures focuses on both the essential work place soft skills, as well as the foundational technical skills needed in the food service industry. The program emphasis on using fresh ingredients incorporates health and wellness concepts along with an introduction to food sustainability and environmental issues. Youth of varying abilities receive individualized positive support and are provided a differentiated work based curriculum to assure success.
The work readiness Pre-ETS program is held at PHILLIPS School ~ Laurel (8920 Whiskey Bottom Road, Laurel, MD) for 4 weeks during the summer. This is a DORS funded program for Maryland students and is open to students from all area schools.
