PCIT: Strengthening Family Bonds Improves Behavior

We’re excited that Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is now among the services our Family Partners team offers.

It’s a time-tested behavior management program for children ages 2 and a-half to 6 and a-half. This early intervention therapy was developed in the 1970s to address defiance and aggression and has since proven to be highly effective for children with ADHD, ODD, anxiety, trauma, and other challenges such as adjustment problems.

PCIT uses real-time live coaching for parents or other caregivers during weekly sessions with their children that can be conducted in-person or remotely. A specially trained therapist observes play sessions from a separate room using a one-way mirror or video feed, giving the adult guidance through an earpiece.

Family Partners Director Carrie Clark and members of her team explain more about how the program works in this video

It usually takes only 16 to 20 weeks to complete PCIT therapy. Initial sessions are designed to build a warm relationship, helping the child feel calm and secure. Then the therapist focuses on teaching the parent/caregiver to communicate effectively and use positive discipline strategies.

One reason PCIT is so effective is that it is assessment-driven. The therapist conducts an assessment each week to make sure the parent/caregiver is mastering the skills they’ve practiced.

Family Partners offers many other services, including comprehensive autism evaluation and Coping Cat therapy for school avoidance and refusal.

Our Graduates Make Us Proud

There’s nothing like a visit from a former student to remind us of why the work we do is so important.

Davontae, seen here with our President and CEO Piper Phillips, dropped by recently to tell us about all the progress he’s made since he graduated from PHILLIPS. He’s about to begin his senior year at Virginia State University in Petersburg.

PHILLIPS helped Davontae develop the interpersonal skills and entrepreneurial spirit that are keeping him on the path to success.

Even though he’s still in college, he has already taken a giant step in his career by establishing a video production company.

Davontae’s experience with the Growing Futures program inspired him to pursue his dreams. He also credits his volunteer work at Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC) in Southeast DC for sparking his interest in creating videos.

We can’t wait for Davontae’s next visit so we can hear more about everything he’s accomplishing.

We’re also delighted to welcome a former student to the PHILLIPS team.

Henry is working this summer as our first 3D Technician Apprentice. He’s assisting Designing Futures Program Manager Sam Son and instructor Tom Meeks at our 3D Lab in Fairfax.

Henry was one of the first students in our 3D design and printing program, which launched in 2016. Although he showed a strong aptitude for digital design from the beginning, it took time for him to develop his skills and gain confidence in himself.

Once quiet and withdrawn, Henry has blossomed thanks to his involvement in our 3D program. After a disappointing post-graduation stint at a fast-food restaurant, he is clearly enjoying the chance to put his talents to work in a supportive environment.

Henry told us years ago that he wants to become a “tech guru.” His summer internship with PHILLIPS is his latest step toward that goal and we’re glad we can provide this opportunity for him.
