The High Cost of Living Expenses Can Be a Barrier to College Success

According to a 2017 Institute for Research on Poverty report on Financial Barriers to College Completion, “Tuition is not the only cost consideration when it comes to college completion. Other parts of the cost of attendance, including living costs, transportation, books and supplies, and personal expenses make up between 50% and 80% of the cost. As a result, low-income students can be faced with making difficult financial choices. For example, tight finances among low-income students can lead them to sacrifice food and housing in order to stay in school. Estimates from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) indicate that some 58,000 U.S. college students are homeless.”

Davontae Needs Our Help!

Myrna Cardin presenting scholarship

Davontae, pictured with Myrna Cardin awarding him a scholarship, enrolled at PHILLIPS School ~ Laurel in eighth grade, a youth who was having difficulty making appropriate decisions that were in his best interest. One of our speakers at our gala this past April, upon his graduation from high school Davontae is a first-generation college attendee! He will be attending Virginia State, a historically black state university.

This summer he participated in orientation and met his roommate! Davontae is filled with anticipation and he is working very hard to save for his expenses. However, college costs are exorbitant.  He needs an iPad to access his accommodations. He also needs to outfit his dorm room with basics such as bedding, a microwave for those late night study sessions and and school supplies.  He also needs clothing.  Davontae’s stellar record and impressive upward trajectory has led to his earning several scholarships including: the Boys and Girls Club for $1500, the Cardin scholarship for $1500 and the E. Lakin Phillips Memorial scholarship for $1500! While these scholarships are terrific, nevertheless he still has needs.

Please click the button below and watch the Davontae’s presentation in front of almost 400 attendees at our 2017 gala. I hope that you are inspired by his words, drive and determination to be a success.

Davontae has overcome many challenges in his life. He is one of PHILLIPS success stories, but he still has a long journey before his story is complete.

Please consider a gift today to help us provide him with the basics for his dorm room and the iPad that is an essential tool to ensure his success!
