May Newsletter 2022

As we start wrapping up the 2021-22 school year, please take a moment to marvel at what the PHILLIPS family has managed to accomplish in spite of (among other things):

  • Another year of pandemic problems large and small

  • Constant traumatic incidents of violence and racism

  • Increasing economic inequity

  • A worsening mental health crisis, especially among youth

In the midst of all that, our students have progressed, our programs have expanded and there will be much to celebrate at graduation ceremonies in June. The students themselves, the families who entrust their children to us, and the generous supporters who fund our programs all deserve credit for this. But none of it would have happened without the teachers and other staff members at our schools.

To understand what drives them, listen to what they say in this video about working at PHILLIPS.

“There’s this expectation that it’s harder to teach kids with special needs and I just don’t think that’s true,” says Tiye Aton, a teacher at our Laurel campus. “It’s just about meeting them where they are.”

That is the basis for everything we do: Recognizing that each person has unique needs and strengths, then having the patience and experience to tailor an educational program that’s right for that individual.

We’ll be doing more than ever in the coming school year, which means we have lots of jobs available right now. We’re hiring special education teachers, assistants, support staff, administrative employees and more. This page lists all of our open positions.

If you or someone you know has always dreamed of working at a place that truly makes a difference in the lives of children, this is the time to connect with PHILLIPS and apply.

“If you know you want to make an impact on kids’ lives, it’s the best job you can have as a teacher.” JeanAnne Breisch, teacher, PHILLIPS School ~ Laurel

Memories to Treasure

Every PHILLIPS student deserves to have a copy of their high school yearbook, but many of them can't afford one.

Your $50 contribution will help ensure that all of our students take home a yearbook filled with cherished memories of this unforgettable school year.

Introducing Our New Nonprofit

We’ve launched the website for SpringForward, the new nonprofit organization PHILLIPS founded to create career opportunities for people who face multiple barriers to employment. Be sure to watch the video on the homepage to see how SpringForward is helping young adults with behavioral health needs make the often-difficult transition from school to work.

SpringForward is one of the major initiatives funded by our $2 Million Capital Campaign, which is off to a strong start thanks to the generosity of Founding Donors Erik Linn, Dr. Sally A. Sibley and the Peter David Brendsel Fund. To contribute to the Capital Campaign, please contact our President & CEO Piper Phillips: piper.phillips@phillipsprograms.org • 703-941-8810

Relive the Fun, Share Gala Photos

We’ve collected the best pictures our team captured at last month’s Gala and posted them on this photo gallery page. Click through them all and pick out your favorites to save and share. You’ll see a button when you mouse over each image that allows you to easily copy the link or post directly to Facebook or Pinterest. We hope you’ll send a few to friends along with a note inviting them to join you in supporting PHILLIPS.
